Wood vs. Composite

Which decking material is right for your lifestyle?

Composite decking installed by Blackrock lasts 25 to 50 years, roughly double a wood deck's 10 to 15 year lifespan. It resists cracking, warping, and splitting, and needs only soap-and-water cleaning or a gentle pressure wash to stay looking new, no sanding, staining, or sealing required.

Wood may be cheaper on day 1, but it can end up costing far more by day 365. Many homeowners choose composite decking because it offers similar pricing with greater durability and lower maintenance compared to traditional wood and staining. That's why we build primarily with composite.

Planning Your Project

Questions about custom deck building.

How long does a Blackrock deck build take?

Every project is different. Smaller builds may take a few days, while larger or more involved projects can take a few weeks. We’ll keep you informed every step of the way.

How long does composite decking last?

Composite decks installed by Blackrock Decks last 25 to 50 years with basic care, roughly double the 10 to 15 year lifespan of a wood deck.

How much does a deck cost in Utah?

Every project is different, so a simple price per square foot doesn’t tell the whole story. Cost depends on the size, decking material, height, stairs, railing, and additions like roofing or lighting. We’ll measure your space and provide a detailed quote at no charge. Have a budget in mind? Let us know, and we’ll work with you to explore your options.

What is the best decking material for Utah weather?

When it comes to Utah’s climate, composite stands apart. Harsh freeze-thaw cycles and intense summer sun can take a toll on traditional wood decking. Trex and TimberTech composite decking is built for durability and long-term performance, helping maintain its look and surface with less upkeep.

Does Blackrock Decks handle the permitting process?

Yes. We are a licensed general contractor. Should you choose, all permits, approvals, and any engineering are handled by Blackrock.
