How Long Does It Take to Build a Deck?

How Long Does It Take to Build a Deck?

Most decks take a few days for smaller builds and a few weeks for larger projects, but the full timeline runs from your first conversation to the final walkthrough, not just the days a crew is on site. A deck construction timeline is the sequence of steps (communication, design, permitting and engineering, build, and walkthrough) that turns an idea into a finished deck. Here is how it actually goes.

The honest answer to "how long to build a deck"

When people ask how long to build a deck, they usually mean the swinging-hammers part. That is fair, and we will get to it. But the build itself is one phase in a longer process, and the planning steps often take more calendar time than the construction. The good news is that most of that early time is not you waiting around. It is us walking your space, nailing down materials, and handling permits so the build goes smoothly once it starts.

At Blackrock Decks, we are your single point of contact from the first call to the final walkthrough. We manage design, engineering, permits, construction, and every warranty registration, so you are not chasing separate companies to keep a project moving.

The five phases of a deck build

Here is the process we follow on every project, and roughly where the time goes.

  1. Communication first. Everything starts with a conversation. We listen to what you want, how you use your yard, and what you are working with. This is where we set expectations so nothing comes as a surprise later.
  2. Design. We walk the space and design around the materials, your budget, and how your yard actually gets used. This is a collaborative phase, so the pace partly depends on how quickly decisions get made.
  3. Permits and engineering. Permitting requirements vary by project, and we review them project by project. We handle the paperwork and any engineering your build needs.
  4. Build. This is the on-site construction. Smaller builds may take a few days, and larger projects a few weeks.
  5. Warranty and walkthrough. We walk the finished deck with you, register your material and labor warranties on your behalf, and hand it over.

What makes a deck take days versus weeks

The build phase is where the range is widest. A simple ground-level platform is a different job than a multi-level deck with a custom roof and integrated lighting. Here is a general sense of what pushes a project from the "few days" end toward the "few weeks" end.

FactorFaster (days)Longer (weeks)
Size and levelsSingle-level, modest footprintLarge or multi-level layouts
HeightLow to the groundElevated, more framing and posts
Added structuresDeck onlyPatio cover, pergola, or custom roof added
Railing complexityStraightforward runsGlass, cable, or long detailed runs
Site conditionsFlat, easy accessSlopes, tricky access, or demolition first
Trade partners involvedNone neededElectrical or roofing coordinated in

When a project needs specialty trades like roofing or electrical, we bring in licensed trade partners we have worked with for years and manage them directly. That coordination is part of what can add time to a bigger build, but it is also why the finished result holds together: one team keeping everyone on schedule and to the same standard.

Why our build time is not the only thing that matters

Speed is easy to promise and hard to do right. We build quality over quantity, and our standards are other companies' upgrades. On every build, the Blackrock Standard includes hidden fasteners instead of visible screw heads, waterproof-taped framing instead of exposed untreated framing, minimum 6x6 posts instead of 4x4, stained deck posts, true fascia boards instead of deck boards used as fascia, and a surface deck border instead of unfinished cut edges.

Those details take care to do correctly, and we would rather build it right than rush it. You can see how that shows up in finished work in our project gallery. If you want the full breakdown of what good framing looks like, we wrote about that in what a deck should include.

How Utah weather fits into the timeline

Along the Wasatch Front we get hot dry summers and heavy snow with freeze-thaw winters. A lot of homeowners assume you can only build in warm months. You cannot. Winter is a valid build season for us, and the same crew, standards, and attention to detail apply in every season, not just the warm ones.

Building in the off-season has a practical timing benefit too: planning your project in winter can mean your deck is finished and ready to enjoy the moment spring arrives. We covered that thinking in why winter is a smart time to build a deck in Utah.

Material choices and the timeline

What you build with does not change the timeline as much as size and complexity do, but it is worth deciding early so design can move forward. We are a Trex Pro Platinum certified installer, one of the highest tiers Trex awards, and we also install TimberTech and other decking options. Composite decking resists fading, warping, and moisture better than wood, which matters a lot given our freeze-thaw winters.

If you are weighing options, start with our composite decks overview, compare Trex and TimberTech, or read our side-by-side in Trex vs TimberTech. Adding a patio cover or pergola will extend the build, but it also extends your season outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the actual deck construction take?

Smaller builds may take a few days, while larger projects can take a few weeks. The difference comes down to size, height, added structures like covers or roofs, and site conditions. We give you a clearer sense of your specific build during the design phase.

How long before construction starts?

That depends on design decisions and permitting, which varies by project and is reviewed project by project. We handle the permits and engineering for you, so the lead time before the build is mostly planning rather than you waiting. The upside is a smoother, faster build once the crew arrives.

Can you build in winter, and will it take longer?

Yes, winter is a valid build season for us along the Wasatch Front. The same crew, standards, and attention to detail apply in every season. Planning now can mean your deck is ready to use as soon as the weather warms up.

Who manages the whole project?

We do. Blackrock Decks is your single point of contact from the first conversation through the final walkthrough, including any licensed trade partners we bring in for roofing or electrical. We also register your material and labor warranties on your behalf and back every build with a 5-year workmanship warranty.
