Follow our tips to learn how to remove snow from Trex decking while keeping it beautiful for seasons to come! Plus, check out a few of our other tips for general Trex decking winter care below.

Pick the Right Snow Shovel for Trex Decks

A lot of new homeowners ask our team if you can shovel snow off a Trex deck, and generally, the answer is yes. However, the type of shovel used makes all the difference.  For light snowfalls, it’s best to use an outdoor broom to gently brush away the snowfall. However, for more significant accumulations, it’s recommended to use a plastic snow shovel while following the grain of the wood when removing snow from Trex decking. While metal shovels may be more durable, they should never be used on composite decking as they can cause unsightly damages such as dings and scratches.

Can You Use Salt on Trex Decking?

The answer is yes, you can use salt on Trex decks! However, homeowners should consider a few precautions in order to mitigate damages. Blackrock and the manufacturers at Trex recommend only using rock salt or calcium chloride. Though it isn’t necessary on Trex Select or Trex Transcend materials, it’s generally a good idea to rinse the salt solution from the surface of your deck as soon as possible.

Can You Put Other Ice Melt on Trex Decking?

Generally, it’s not recommended to use anything other than Calcium chloride or rock salt as ice melts on Trex decking. Using other materials or ice melts could potentially void your manufacturer’s warranty. Generally, Calcium chloride or rock salt is the best ice melt for Trex Decking anyway, and you shouldn’t need anything additional.

Trex is the Best Deck Material for Snow

While it might seem like more work to properly remove snow from Trex decks in the winter, Trex composite decking is actually one of the best deck materials for snow on the market today and one of the easiest to maintain. Made from high-quality materials that are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions such as snow and ice, Trex decking is the perfect choice for anyone seeking a low-maintenance outdoor space that remains beautiful (and functional) for years to come. However, failing to follow the manufacturer recommendations above could result in a voiding of your Trex warranty, so be sure to contact our team for additional questions or concerns.
